Research theme 1 on climate and weather information: What information on climate services do you need?
In this online discussion forum on June 30 at 11:30 am London time we will discuss the BRACED Knowledge Manager research theme on climate and weather information, which is still under development. The KM plans to produce an ‘evidence digest’ on this topic, synthesizing existing information and state-of-the-art in climate services. We would like to discuss ideas for this theme and what to include in the digest.

Yes, communication and use of climate information is a core part of CARE's project activities
in Niger. -
For Myanmar, there is a Myanmar Climate Data Portal developed by ADPC and DMH dmh-cdp.wowspace.org -
We have projects in Kenya that are trying to communicate climate information is user-friendly ways

CARE facilitate access and use of climate information by local communities for better decision making.

one major problem is limited access to context specific (village level) climate information instead of regional information (Tillabery region level).

IN Burkina we would like to work with data from the department of Meteorology, but they are hardly interested in working with classical rain gauges. They prefer a netzork with a high density of automatic all weather stations. This takes a lot of time to set up and therefore to obtain data -
Do you find any challenges working with National meteorological services?

We do not experience problems accessing this information but if all partners based in Sahel are going to the same institutions - it seems to be at least AGHRYMET and CILSS, then it would be extremely useful if the KM were able to provide some sort of online template on which they provide this information (or one body provides it). To save everyone spending the time going to the same institutions for the same information. I don't know if others agree?

@Annabelle: yes this is a good option to explore especially in the case of Niger where three consortium (CARE, AFL and CRS) are all working in the same region (Tillabery). However, I guess, the CARE project will still need tailored climate information because access to/use of climate info by local populations is part of CARE project activities like I said.

Do any of the other BRACED projects have any experience with early warning systems which are based on data collected by farmers at village level, e.g. in combination with radio broadcasts?

Another question from Burkina Faso: how useful would it be use satelite imagery to monitor rainfal and to make short term prédictions. This could possibly be organised with earth networks and/or ASECNA. But we would like to better understand the added value of this as conmpared to using data from all weather systems.

I would love to hear from other consortium on they work on the with or without National MET Office especially on the sustainability of the information diffusion after the project and on the mandate of diffusion held either by the Met office or some other structure depends on
